Shrike Ford Indy Car - $P.O.R.

This Shrike was built in 1966 by Halibrand Engineering and originally powered by an Offenhauser engine. The driver was Gig Stephens. The car was sponsored by aircraft manufacturer Fairchild Hiller. It was first entered in the 1966 Indianapolis 500. They did not make a qualifying attempt that year.

This Shrike was built in 1966 by Halibrand Engineering and originally powered by an Offenhauser engine. This car was originally owned by Karl Hall and driven by Gig Stephens. The car was sponsored by aircraft manufacturer Fairchild Hiller. Entered for the Indianapolis 500, they did not make qualifying attempt that year. The car made one more appearance in 1966 at Milwaukee, starting 13 and finishing 18th.

Stephens drove the car at Trenton twice and was a DNQ at Indianapolis. For 1968, Stephens purchased the car from Hall.  The car competed only at Trenton and Langhorne that year. In 1969, he entered the races at Langhorne, Trenton and Dover, but only qualified for the Trenton race.

In 1970, he converted the car from Offenhauser power to a Ford Boss 351 engine and a Hewland LG500 gearbox. To our knowledge, it is the only Indy car that used big cylinder head Boss 351 engine. It was entered in 5 events from 1970 to 1973, 4 at Trenton and 1 at Langhorne.

This is a project, mostly complete. The Hewland LG500 gearbox is not there, but a Halibrand gearbox which it  originally used comes with it.
