This Wally Meskowski built roadster is only 1 of 2 roadster he built in his career, and the only one remaining. It was built for owner Peter Schmidt for the 1960 Indianapolis 500.  Driver Bob Veith in the Schmidt Special started 25th and finished 8th place on the lead lap of the 1960 500. That was the highpoint for this car. It failed to qualify in 1961. For 1962 it was sold and became the Turtle Drilling Special. Drivers Leon Clum and Chuck Arnold failed to qualify. 

The car was put in storage in St.Louis. Discovered in 1977, it went through a 3 year restoration process. Indy 500 winner Sam Hanks demonstrated the car in 1980 at the Ontario Motor Speedway. It was then sold and sent to a new owner in the UK. While there it had a number of owners, including Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. It returned to the US in the early 2000's where the paint and graphics were restored to the original Schmidt Special.
