The Ford Indy V8 engine (colloquial four-cam) was a revolutionary 4.2 L (255 ci) dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) racing engine introduced in 1964. Built to break the dominance of front-engine Offenhauser roadsters, it powered mid-engined Lotus and Lola chassis to three consecutive Indianapolis 500 victories from 1965 to 1967.

  • Configuration: 90° V8, DOHC, 32-valve (four valves per cylinder)

  • Displacement: 4.2 L (255 cubic inches)

  • Horsepower: 375–425 hp (naturally aspirated); later turbocharged versions exceeded 700+ hp

  • Max RPM: Capable of exceeding 9,000 RPM (peak power typically hit around 8,000–8,300 RPM)

  • Weight: 350–360 lbs (utilizing aluminum block, aluminum cylinder heads, and magnesium oil pans)

  • Oiling System: Dry sump system with a cast-magnesium oil pans
